Clam Chowder

Serves 6-8
I got this recipe from my mom, who got it from her friend Madeline Tacy - thanks to you both!!
Preparation Time
Ingredients
- 3 slices bacon, chopped
- 1/2 onion, chopped
- 6 cups pealed, diced potatoes
- 1 pint (2 cups) half-and-half
- 2 cups milk
- 3/4 cup flour
- 1/2 teaspoon thyme
- 1/4 teaspoon marjoram
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 (6 1/2 oz) can chopped clams
- salt and pepper to taste
Directions
- brown bacon with onion in soup kettle
- add potatoes, juice from clams and enough water to just cover potatoes; bring to a boil, cover and cook 10 minutes
- add clams, half-and-half and spices
- bring almost to a boil; in the meantime make thickener by slowly mixing milk and flour (add milk using a wire wisk)
- add milk and flour mixture to soup; heat for another minute or so
- serve in large bowls with a bit of butter floating on top
